Healthy Body Healthy Mind Unit 8 Lesson 4
Year 3 level

Description

(Period 4) This lesson introduces and practices the grammar structure "It's + adjective + to + verb" through engaging speaking games and activities.

Materials

Abc Verb Flashcards
Abc Powerpoint
Abc Adjectives Flashcards
Abc Picture Cards showing locations

Main Aims

  • Students will be able to use the target grammar structure to form sentences about activities and their related qualities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will be able to pronounce the target structure accurately. Students will be able to understand and respond to questions using the target structure. Students will participate actively and cooperatively in group activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Adjective Charades Students act out adjectives (ex. happy, sad, tired, hungry) without speaking. Their classmates guess the adjective. This reviews familiar adjectives and energizes the class.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Picture Prompt + Sentence Starter Teacher shows a picture card (ex. a child sleeping in bed). Teacher says, "It's… to…". Students complete the sentence with an adjective and a verb related to the picture. Example: "It's important to sleep well." Repeat with a few different picture prompts, eliciting various adjectives and verbs.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Question & Answer Flashcard Game Divide the class into 2 or 3 teams. Teacher shows a picture card (ex. children playing at the park) and asks a question using the target structure: "What's fun to do at the park?" The first student from each team to raise their hand and answer correctly (using the target structure) wins a point for their team. Example: "It's fun to play with friends at the park." Use a variety of picture cards and questions to practice different adjectives and verbs. Examples: "What's easy to do at home?" "What's important to do before you go to bed?" "What's yummy to eat for breakfast?"

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Sentence Builder Relay Race Divide the class into 2 or 3 teams. Each team gets a set of verb flashcards and a set of adjective flashcards. Place the flashcards at one end of the classroom and the teams at the other end. The first student from each team runs to the flashcards, chooses one verb and one adjective, and creates a sentence using the target structure. They then run back and tell their team the sentence. The next student then runs and creates a different sentence. The relay continues until all team members have had a turn. The team that creates the most grammatically correct sentences within the time limit wins. This encourages creative use of the structure in a fun, competitive environment.
