Description

In this lesson, SS will be engaged in Grammar, developed by a GD related to verbs followed by both gerund and infinitive. And after aims are completed, work on productive skills with a writing activity in the context of a Thief sends apology letter to victim.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed grammar practice from a given text that includes phrases such as “goes on to explain, remembered to contact”, in the context of a Thief sends apology letter to victim.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice writing about using gerunds and infinitives after verbs.

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead In) (7-10 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and relate to the previous text “Thief sends apology letter to victim". And introducing the new TL by OHP & writing on the WB and SS highlighting the TL from the text.

-form groups. -refer to the previous text and ask SS to have it ready on their desks. -ask the SS to underline a group of verbs in the text. The group of verbs are in HO1. -ask the SS to fold HO1 and read the upper part only. -give HO1 which its upper part includes a box of the following verbs: expect, go ox(x4), intend, plan, remember(x2), stop(x2) and strive. -start the activity and monitor. -feedback by giving each group the answer key. -ask students to unfold HO1 and complete the table where they have to put the verbs they already highlighted, in two columns: verbs followed by a gerund or infinitive, and verbs followed by both. -feedback by giving the answer key for each group.

Stage 2 (MFP & complete the sentences with the correct form). (13-15 minutes) • To present the TL and practice it by completing the sentences with the correct form.

-Use the OHP to show the following sentences on the WB, and ask CCQs: 1. Read the following two sentences and answer the questions below. a) Did you remember to pay? b) Do you remember paying? Which one means “not to forget”? Which one is talking about an image in the mind? 2. Read the following two sentences and answer the questions below. a) She went on apologizing. b) She went on to apologize. Which one means “the apology continued for a long time”? Which one means “the apology happened next”? 3. Read the following two sentences and answer the questions below. a) They stopped to chat. b) They stopped chatting. Which one means “they stopped doing something in order to chat”? Which one means “their chat finished”? - write the form on the WB and draw the SS' attention to the pronunciation of infinitives and the link between the week to and the strong verb. - Feedback by asking the SS to give meaning to additional two sentences as a follow up. -form new groups. - instruct the SS to complete the sentences with the correct form in the upper part of HO2. -ask the SS to fold HO2 and read the upper part only. -give HO2 and start the activity. -ask the SS to form pairs and check their answers. -feedback by nominating SS to write answers on the board.

Stage 3 (match the six sentences with their meaning). (7-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in stage 2

- Instruct the SS to unfold HO2: You will have to match the previous six sentences with their meaning. -monitor and error correction on the spot. - Feedback on the answers by writing them on the WB.

Stage 4 :( writing a short story using gerunds and infinitives) (7-10 minutes) • To focus on the productive skill of writing, by writing a short story using the TL

-Form new groups. -nominate a secretary for each group. -Give SS directions to write a short story using at least two gerunds and two infinitives. -post the stories on the walls. -Make the WC mingle, try to give a meaning for each gerund and infinitive. - Feedback by discussing the most interesting things mentioned in the stories.
