Elementary-A2 level
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide detailed listening practice using a text about Kingston Culturefest in the context of Cultural events
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Cultural events
Procedure (43-53 minutes)
A leaflet of a festival is shown to the Ss for a w/c discussion. Some ccqs are asked, What's this leaflet about? (It's a festival), When and where is it? (It's in Edinburgh from 7th to 14th of August in 2015) What cultural events are there in the festival? (performance, conversation, and etc). To check if Ss remember the cultural events, they are referred to the Vocabulary on pp 17.
Ss look at the tickets on pp 20 and are asked "What kinds of events are included in the Kingston Culturefest? They scan the tickets and their answers are written on the w/b. Then the pre-listening question handouts are given and Ss find the answers in pairs. The answer keys are the given out to be checked in pairs.
Ss listen to people calling the festival and complete gap-filling exercise individually. Then they check their answers in pairs. Some Qs are asked to see if Ss could find the answers like "Where is the lecture on Picasso? (at Kingston Gallery 1), When is the history of latin music lecture and culture? (at 2:00), How much are the balcony ticket to Chris Brown's concert? (18 Dollar), When do the movies start at the Lemon Theater? (at 7:00)". If necessary, Ss listen to the passage again to check their answers.
Before Listening, Ss look at the map on pp 20 and answer these Qs, What streets do you see? (Central Av., Greenway, Westway, 66th to 74th St.), Which park is on Greenway? (Green Park), Which park is on Central Av.? (Lamont Park). The answers are checked as a w/c. They listen to the passage and find the place of each event on the map. As an extension activity, Ss describe the location of the events to a partner. Then Possible descriptions are given out for the Ss to compare with their own descriptions.
Ss use the event listing on pp 20 and 21 to practice prepositions. An example is put on the w/b, Barefoot in the park is at the Lamont Theater, or Lamont Theater is on the 66th Street. For each event Ss write sentences with in, on and at and they check with their partners. Then they are asked to compare the events they would like to see using the conversation strategies they learned in lesson 1 and 2 and the language in the recycle box on p 21. They check off each question they ask. The activity is modeled with a more confident student. Then they practice the conversation in pairs.
