10 Facts about the lotteries

Description

In this lesson, SS will be engaged in Reading, by giving them a text about Lotteries. And after aims are completed, work on productive skills with a speaking activity in the context of: what would you do , if you won a 100.000$.

Main Aims

  • To practice the receptive skill of Reading by skimming and scanning.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice the productive skills of Speaking & Writing on a specific subject which is the Students' opinion about lotteries , and winning a lottery.

Procedure

Stage 1 (Lead In) (7-10 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and make the context of the lesson interesting for SS, by playing a short video clip that shows a man winning a prize at lottery. And introducing new vocabulary.

-Play the video clip. -Ask SS :What was the clip about? -Feedback random answers on the previous question. -Form groups by a lottery game. -Instruct the SS to answer in their groups the following questions in HO1: How many lotteries do you know about in your country? Do you know countries where lotteries are popular? Would you ever spend money on a lottery? -Give HO1 and start the activity. -Feedback on some answers. And ask the CCQ: Why? - Do eliciting by WB demonstrating on the following words/phrases :(jackpot, lump sum, annual payment) -Ask CCQ on the following statement : If the prize was 100,000$ and I was paid 100,000$ What did I get? The jackpot. -Ask CCQ on the following statement : If the prize was 100,000$ and I was just paid 80,000$ What did I get? A lump sum. -Ask CCQ on the following statement : If the prize was 100,000$ and I was paid 10,000$ per year. What did I get? An annual payment.

Stage 2 (skim the text to choose the most interesting fact). (5-8 minutes) • To focus on the sub skill of skimming by answering three quick questions

-Write the following question on the board : Which facts do you find most interesting? -Instruct the SS about HO2 : You will have a reading, then answer the question written on the WB. - give HO2 (ten facts about lotteries, ). And start the activity. - instruct the SS to form pairs and share answers. - feedback and discuss why.

Stage 3 (match the ten facts to their sources). • To focus on the sub skill of scanning by doing a matching task

- Instruct the SS about HO3 :You will have another reading, then Within your groups match every fact to its source. - give HO3 (contains three sources: encyclopedia , business articles and gambling websites) - Feedback on the answers by writing them on the WB.

Stage 4:(Speakingabout what would you do if you won a 100,000$ in the lottery) (7-10 minutes) • To practice on the productive skill of speaking by

-Form new groups. -Give SS directions to write individually a list of three things only to spend the 100,000$ on. -Give SS HO4 (empty small colored papers , numbered from 1 to 3 ). -Make the WC mingle , showing each other's lists. - Feedback by discussing the most interesting things mentioned in the lists .

Stage 5:(Writing a paragraph about , whether if lottery is good or bad) (7-10 minutes) • To focus on the productive skill of writing , by writing a paragraph on the lottery.

- Form new groups. -Nominate a secretary for each group. - instruct the SS to write a paragraph about the following question : Do you think lotteries are a good or a bad thing? Why? -Give HO5 (empty white papers) - post their paragraphs across the classroom. -Instruct the SS to stand up and read all the paragraphs. -Feedback on some ideas from the posted paragraphs.
