Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of using can and can't in the context of a story of Tim and his grandpa

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of outdoor activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

in this stage I show them pictures of the story and ask them if they remember the characters and the story. then I close the book and ask them what outdoor activities do they remember from the story

Exposure (3-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

in this stage I play the story for children to listen and repeat

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

on this stage I ask the students what Grandpa says to Tim in the end of the story and write it on the whiteboard

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

in this stage I ask the students to look at the pictures on page 21 Look and say, I read the sentences and questions for children to repeat and point to the pictures. I write the sentences and questions on the whiteboard and read it one more time for the students to repeat then I rub out the activity and replace it with another one (I can skate --> I can swim etc.) the students repeat

Controlled Practice (5-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

in this stage I ask the students to look the pictures on exercise 3 Write, I point to each one and ask the students what activity they see. then I ask them to look at the pictures and I ask them is it He/She/Them? then I ask Can or Can't? then I tell the students to do the exercise in 5 minutes the answers will be checked with the whole class

Semi-Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

in this stage together with the students we do practice number 4. I read the question bubble and a student reads the answer bubble. we do a similar thing for pictures of practice number 3
