Procedure (31-41 minutes)
Warm-up question: "Have you ever traveled to another city or country?/ Where are you plan to visit in the future?" Picture prompt: Show 2-3 travel-related pictures (airports, trains, hotels, famous places). Ask: "Where do you think these people are going?" "How do you feel when you travel?" Mini-pair discussion: Students talk in pairs about their last trip for 1-2 minutes.
Reading: Story: Anna’s Adventures Anna loves traveling. Last summer, she traveled to Italy for two weeks. She flew to Rome and stayed in a small hotel near the Colosseum. Every morning, she ate breakfast at a local café and walked around the city. She visited the Vatican, took many pictures, and enjoyed Italian food, especially pizza and pasta. After five days in Rome, she took a train to Venice. She rode in a gondola on the canals, visited beautiful museums, and bought souvenirs for her friends. Now, Anna is back home, but she is already planning her next trip! Next summer, she is going to travel to Japan. She is going to visit Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. In Tokyo, she is going to see the famous Shibuya Crossing and try sushi at a traditional restaurant. In Kyoto, she is going to visit ancient temples and wear a kimono. In Osaka, she is going to go to Universal Studios Japan. Anna is very excited about her next adventure! Questions: 11. Where did Anna go last summer? 2. What did she do in Rome? 3. How did she travel from Rome to Venice? 4. What is she going to do in Japan? 5. How does Anna feel about her next trip?
1. Grammar Explanation: Past Simple (for past trips) Example: "Anna traveled to Italy." Regular: traveled, visited, watched (add -ed) Irregular: go → went, see → saw Future ‘Going to’ (for travel plans) Example: "She is going to visit Japan." 2. Structure: subject + be + going to + verb 3. Contrast and Timeline Activity: Write a timeline on the board: 2024 → "traveled" (past) 2026 → "is going to travel" (future)
Provide a gap-fill exercise to strengthen the understanding of the targeted languages. "Last year, I ___ (go) to Spain. I ___ (see) the Sagrada Familia. Next year, I ___ (visit) Canada and ___ (see) Niagara Falls."
Pair students as a travel agent and a traveler. (Role play) The traveler first shares details about a past trip (using Past Simple). The travel agent asks questions to learn more. Then, the travel agent suggests a future trip (using Going to). The traveler reacts and discusses plans. Example Conversation: Traveler: “Last year, I went to Thailand. I visited Bangkok. I saw beautiful temples and ate a lot of street food!” Travel Agent: “That sounds amazing! How was the food?” Traveler: “It was spicy but delicious!” Travel Agent: “For your next trip, I recommend Japan. You are going to love it! You are going to visit Tokyo and see Mount Fuji!” Traveler: “That sounds great! I am going to try sushi and visit the cherry blossom parks.” Ideally, students switch the roles after one conversation.
