(MOVE TO SLIDE 3) T: I made a timeline for you so you can visualize what we are talking about here T will explain the slide: We use past simple to talk about something that started and finished in the past: Example: “Before he moved here he lived in Glasgow for eight years” (He doesn't live in Glasgow now) We use present perfect to talk about something that started in the past and continues in the present. Example: “I have lived here for six years” (I started living here six years ago and I still live here now) (MOVE TO SLIDE 4) T will explain the slide: We use for with a period of time (how long), a duration of time (e.g., for five years, for two months). Example: “We have been married for twelve years” We use since with a specific point in time (when something started) with a specific point in time (e.g., since 2010, since last Monday). Example: “We have lived in our motorhome since 2008!” Like in restaurants logos. It says since T can ask CCQ to check understanding: Which tense do we use to describe something that started and finished in the past? (Past simple) Which tense do we use when something started in the past and continues now? (Present Perfect) Can we use for with a specific point in time? (No, it’s for a period of time) Can we use since to say when something started? (Yes) (MOVE TO SLIDE 5) T will explain form: This is the structure of the present perfect: Subject + have/has + past participle + for/since + time expression T will construct three sentences out loud and will write them on the slide (T will say subject: I, have, past participle lived, for, time expression six years) Sentences to construct: I have lived here for six years. We have been married for twelve years. We have lived in our motor home since. After writing the sentences T will ask if there can be any contractions and proceed to change to contractions in all of the sentences: ! have = I've T will choose 3 SS to construct a sentence in present perfect and will write them on the slide. T: SS can you come up with a sentence in present perfect? T will now cover pronunciation: SS can you repeat after me? I’ve lived here for six years. Where is the contraction? It should be pronounced smoothly. Can you all please repeat after me: I´ve, I’ve Remember that lived is in the past so we have to pronounce the d at the end. Can you all please repeat after me: lived, lived. And in this phrase the words lived here are naturally connected. Can you all please repeat after me: (linking) lived here, lived here. Now please repeat the whole sentence after me: I’ve lived here for six years; I’ve lived here for six years. SS can you repeat after me? We’ve been married for twelve years. Where is the contraction?
