Description

In this lesson, students practice different reading skills based on a text about cats and dogs. The lesson starts with some warm-up aimed to elicit some blocking words. This is followed by exercises aiming to improve students' skimming, scanning and detailed reading skills. The lesson will come to an end with a descriptive writing activity using the theme in the reading.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about crazy humans in the context of animals

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a descriptive paragraph in the context of animals

Procedure

Pre-reading and dealing with blocking vocabulary (7-12 minutes) • To set the lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows pictures of two pets and asks the students some questions connected with the reading. The teacher also tries to teach them some of the blocking words in the reading.

While reading (5-8 minutes) • To help the learners practice skimming, scanning and detailed reading skills

The teacher asks the students to read the passages quickly and answer the skimming questions. Having finished answering the skimming questions, the teacher asks them to move their eyes through the lines to find the specific information and answer the scanning questions. The students are the asked to check their answers with their partners. This is followed by feedback.

Post-reading (8-12 minutes) • to help the students deal with inferring questions and check for accurate comprehension of the text

At this stage, the teacher asks the students to read the reading in details and individually to answer the detailed questions on the handouts. This is followed by pair check and classroom feedback.

(5-9 minutes) • to give the students and opportunity to make connections with the text and their own experiences,

Having learnt how to write descriptive paragraph previous in the week, the teacher finally asks the students to imagine the situation in the text and describe themselves from a pet's view using the forms previously taught in the class. This step may go on through the next lesson.
