Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Health and wellbeing in the context of Children taking risks

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in free speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

During this time, i would like to introduce the topic of the lesson. I would start by speaking to the students about the health and well being of children. Do you think children should be left to play alone? Do you think they should be supervised while playing? How old should children be for them to play without supervision?

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre teach the following vocabulary words found within the text- sedentary, resilience, strangulation, fixated, overprotective, cyberbullies, extraordinary, self-regulate. This will be done very briefly therefore, using the WB.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

This activity will provide ss practice in reading for gist. Learners will quickly read the text (2-3 mins) and choose the best of three summaries that describes the text they have read. SS will initially work individually. After they have chosen their answer they will compare with a partner before getting teacher feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

This task involves getting the ss to read for specific information and to provide practice in close reading. Learners will read text again and answer T/F questions. SS can work in pairs. False answers must be corrected by underlining the correct passage in the text. T feedback follows.

Post Reading/ Speaking (10-15 minutes) • to encourage fluency speaking in a classroom environment

This activity requires ss to role play/debate. SS are given role play cards 1 and 2. Each card has a different role. one agrees with the authors stance (The Risky Parent), while the other disagrees (The Overprotective Parent). Each pair of students will receive Role Card 1 and Role Card 2. SS will take a little preparation time and then will meet up with their partner to debate. SS will need to debate/discuss thier opinions based on the role card they are given.
