Description

In this lesson, learners will practice simple past using regular verbs in the context of people's lives. The class will start with an old picture of grandparents being shown around the class. This should start a discussion about my grandparents which I will lead to start a discussion among the ss about their grandparents. In this context, we will start the class with a video clip of Shirley Temple Black, followed by speaking and controlled writing exercises for past simple, using regular verbs.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Display picture of grandparents and get the ss to ask me questions about them. Pair the ss or grp in 3s and get them to ask each other about their grandparents.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Pre teach vocabulary- retired Distribute H/O with the pictures of Shirley Temple Black. Ask if the ss have heard of her. Show a video clip of Shirley Temple on You Tube. CCQs: How old do you think she is? What's her job?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

1.Direct Ss' attention to text A/ex 1. Clearly instruct ss to: Listen to the audio clip and do the 1st exercise. After playing the audio clip, ask ss to check their answers in grps : CCQ: When is this clip referring to? Write one of the sentences from this text and name parts of the sentence, focusing on present simple verb form.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

2. Introduce text B as an activity to ss where they work in grps to spot the past form of is and can. SS check the answers among themselves. Distribute answer keys. One ss from the grp that finishes first gets to choose the ss who will answer the 2nd bit of the exercise. Write the sentence focusing on past simple verb form- When she was a child she worked in films. 3. The 3rd part of the grammar ex will follow the example. 4. Listen to Audio clip 2.Introduce ex 4 as a matching activity. Ss have either the infinitive or the past form of the words. They have to find the pair and display on the W/B . 5. Ask ss to try and do task C, based on the above. Play tape if needed or as the answer key. 6. Do, does-past form did- write on the board. Did used in questions about the past simple. Didn't ( did not) is the negative form. SS practice in pairs using these forms.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • Practise the past simple tense as a controlled speaking exercise.

7. Depending on the time left, either do Ex 6 as a pair/ grp where they ask each other questions or give the answer keys.
