Description

This 90-minute lesson plan is designed for young adults aged 18-25 in a small group of 6 students. The primary objective is to teach students how to use "can," "could," and "be able to" effectively in conversations about ability, possibility, and requests. Through a variety of engaging and interactive activities, students will practice using these modal verbs in different tenses while improving their speaking, listening, and collaborative skills.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Engages students and introduces the target grammar naturally.

Play "Pantomime" where students act sentences using "can" or "could."

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Present examples of "can," "could," and "be able to" with power point.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Elicit sentences from students about their abilities using "can," "could," or "be able to," and play a game.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Explain the form and pronunciation of the target language with examples (e.g., “I will be able to swim after lessons”).

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students complete a worksheet with fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice exercises. Answers reviewed together.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Play a game where students form sentences using "could" (past) or "will be able to" (future).

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students plan and present a learning challenge about a skill they want to develop, using all three grammar forms.
