CELTA Teaching Practice 5
Upper-intermediate level
Materials
Main Aims
-
Students practice fluency in using the target language in conversation about their feelings.
Subsidiary Aims
-
Students practice fluency in using target language for discussing plans and preferences. Students improve listening comprehension by recognizing phrases for making suggestions and negotiating.
Procedure (32-39 minutes)
Show images of popular weekend destinations (e.g., a beach, a mountain cabin, a city skyline). The teacher asks students which destinations they prefer for a weekend trip and why.
Display a dialogue on the screen where two friends plan a weekend trip. Example: A: "Let’s go to the mountains this weekend." B: "That sounds fun! What about the beach instead?" A: "Good idea. We could stay at a beach hotel." Read the dialogue aloud to the class and ask for volunteers to read it in pairs. Highlight key phrases (e.g., "Let’s...," "What about...," "We could...") and check students’ understanding of the dialogue.
Use slides to explain: Making suggestions: "Let’s...," "How about...," "Why don’t we...?" Responding to suggestions: "That sounds great," "I’m not sure," "Maybe another time." Negotiating: "We could...," "What if we...?" Focus on form, meaning, and pronunciation: Example: "Let’s stay at a cozy cabin." / Stress on the main activity (e.g., "stay"). Practice through drilling.
In pairs/groups, students plan a weekend trip: Round 1: Decide on a destination and one activity. Round 2: Add details about transportation and accommodation. Round 3: Discuss any challenges (e.g., budget, weather) and find solutions. After each round, students share their plans with the class.
Conduct an open-class discussion about how they found the conversations. Highlight common errors and provide corrections. Reinforce correct usage of target language.
