Description

In this lesson, students will deduce meaning from context. They will practise speaking by talking about a healthy diet and interviewing each other on eating habits. They will practise listening for specific information. The lesson will also include an exercise on speaking using present simple or continuos forms.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, the students will have practiced deducing meaning from context, semi controlled speaking, and listening for specific information the context of healthy and unhealthy diets

Subsidiary Aims

  • The students will practice listening for specific information and speaking

Procedure

Lead-in (10-12 minutes) • To take over from my colleague and continue with the lesson

Give out cards for students to match words or phrases with defenitions. They will work in 3 groups and race to complete the task. Feedback will be via an answer key. This exercise will help in deducing meaning from context

Speaking (10-15 minutes) • Encourage students to speak

Students will discuss which of the two women have a healthier diet and why. Feedback via nomination The students will interview each other with the questions provided. Teacher to demonstrate by asking a question to one or two students. The students to walk around while interviewing each other. Teacher will play music to encourage students to speak more. Teacher will move among the group and observe.

Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging listening task and practice listening for specific information

Get students interested in the topic by showing them a picture of Rumiko. Ask the class to guess where is she from? Do you think food is a pleasure for her or fuel? Explain to the students that they will now listen to what Rumiko has to say about food. Tell them that they will have to just listen and should not write anything. Play the tape once. Ask the whole class Do you think food for her is fuel or pleasure? Ask students to justify. quick exercise. Ask students to work in pairs for the next exercise. Distribute the paper with questions. Ask students to listen carefully once again and answer the questions. Play the audio again. Have the answers pinned up on the wall so that they can move around and check for the answers

Speaking (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with a speaking exercise to use present simple or continuos

Ask teh students to work in groups of three and interview each other with the below questions: 1. What do you usually have for breakfast 2. How many cups of coffee do you drink a day? 3. Where do you usually have lunch
