Description

In this lesson students learn about past simple through PPP in the context of holiday. The lesson starts with a talk about the way students spent their last weekend. It is followed by a speaking practice focusing on students accuracy in using the TL in the same context.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start the class by talking a bout how I spent my last weekend and the things that happened to me.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask three of my students to tell me about the things they did last weekend.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some of my students' sentences on the board in the correct past simple form.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board and ask my students to say if the sentences are about the past, present or future? (past) Are the actions completed? (Yes) Can I mention the exact time that they happened in the past? (Yes) The structure of the sentences will be elicited by asking questions like: What is the roll of I in the sentence? (sub) What is the next word after the subject? (verb) Is the verb in the simple form or we need to add ed? (add ed). What is the past form of go? (went) Is go a regular verb or irregular? (irregular) The pronunciation of the verbs like said, read, thought will be drilled in the class. The ending sound of the words when ed is added is mentioned as well. (asked - wanted - finished)

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to exercise a on page 120 in 4 minutes individually. They will have 3 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then the answers will be checked with the whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will ask my students to tell each other about the things they did yesterday. each student needs to give their partner at least 5 sentences. They will then tell the class who had a better day.

Free Practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students are going to be divided into groups of 4. They will have 10 minutes to talk about their best holiday ever. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end.
