first conditional lesson
pre-intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To introduce and practice the use of the first conditional structure (If + present simple, will + base verb) in a meaningful and communicative context, enabling students to talk about possible future actions based on conditions.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To improve students fluency in speaking by engaging in interactive and creative activities. To develop listening and reading comprehension skills through exposure to the target language in a context. To enhance accuracy in using the first conditional structure through controlled and freer practice.
Procedure (17-23 minutes)
The T starts the class with a brief greeting and asks Ss to imagine they have won a free ticket to travel anywhere. The T groups Ss in pairs and asks them to discuss: Where will you go? What will you do? The T elicits a few answers and writes example sentences on the board, naturally introducing if and will structures. The T intends to engage Ss and set the context for the lesson. The T provides brief FB by highlighting some good ideas and correcting one or two errors if necessary.
The T distributes or displays a short text about Sarah planning a picnic and asks Ss to read it individually. The T asks CCQs to check understanding, e.g., What will Sarah do if it rains? The T underlines the first conditional sentences in the text and briefly explains the structure. The T ensures Ss understand the context and highlights the use of the target language in real situations.
The T writes the first conditional structure on the board: If + present simple, will + base verb. The T provides two examples, e.g., If it rains, I will stay home, and If you study hard, you will pass your exam. The T introduces a matching exercise where Ss pair condition halves with result halves. The T gives Ss time to complete the task in pairs and provides FB by checking answers as a class.
The T asks Ss to think about their weekend plans and write three sentences using the first conditional (e.g., If it’s sunny, I will go to the beach.). The T asks Ss to pair up and share their ideas, encouraging them to ask follow-up questions like Why will you do that? The T elicits a few responses from the class and praises creativity. The T intends to let Ss use the target language freely in a communicative context.
The T listens during the productive task and writes down common errors (e.g., If it will rain, I will stay home). The T provides FB by writing a few incorrect sentences on the board and asking Ss to correct them together as a class. The T praises correct use of the first conditional and highlights creative responses to build confidence. The T ensures Ss leave the class with clear understanding and corrected errors.
