To provide listening and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of news headlines.
Procedure (35-48 minutes)
T shows to the Ss a flash card for headlines and ask them to guess what is in the flash card, in a word. Ss will try their best. T show the Ss the word (headline) on a flash card with its meaning/form/pronunciation.
T give instructions about the first HO and hand it to the Ss. ICQs: Are you going to listen to watch? Will you underline or order the headlines? Alone or in pair? Ss watch a silent video to order some headlines as in the video. Ss check with partner. Ss check with T. T show the Ss the answers.
T groups the Ss into two groups, and gives the instructions. T gives the Ss HO2. ICQs: Are you going to use your books or the dictionary? In pairs or in groups? Are you going to check the whole headlines or just the underlined words? Are you going to write the meaning or the transcription? WC check with each other, then with T. T elicits, modals and drills the underlined words on a flash card.
T gives Ss Ho3 and instructions. Ss match the headlines with the pictures individually. Ss check in pairs. Ss check with T. T shows the answers. T show the answers.
T groups the Ss into two groups. T gives Ss Ho4 and instructions. Ss match the headlines with the pictures individually. Ss check in pairs. Ss check with T. T shows the answers.
T gives HO5 and gives instructions. Ss listen to audio recorder and match the stories with the headline. Ss check in pairs. Ss check with T. T shows the answers.
T asks the Ss to choose any one of the headlines and write some notice about it to do freer practice.
Ss sit in pairs and are asked to make a conversation the headline they wrote about it, they will be asked to use the new vocabulary they have learnt in the lesson.
