Procedure (39-52 minutes)
T shows a bottle of sun cream and asks “When do we need this?” to elicit the word “beach holiday”. She asks “Where is a good place to have a beach holiday in Turkey?” Then, she shows a picture of a pair of walking boots and asks “For what kind of a holiday do you need these?” to elicit “nature holiday”. She says “Tell me some places for a nature holiday?” and she asks “Which type of holiday is your favourite, beach or nature holidays?”
T shows the picture of the couple packing for holiday. She asks “Do you think they’re going on a beach holiday or a nature holiday?”
She shows the objects in the picture to elicit the words. After elicitation of each word she models and drills the word chorally and individually and highlights the stress. Then she writes the word on the board and clarify its form (countable or uncountable). For uncountable ones, she elicits the quantity phrases such as a piece of, a packet of etc. using pictures.
Students work in pairs and match the quantity phrases with the words. After they finish, they check their answers, firstly with other pairs and then from the answer key.
Using the picture of the couple packing, Ss work in pairs and ask each other the objects in the picture by asking “What is this/are these?” and taking turns. T monitors and does whole class feedback.
Ss listen to the recording in which a couple is packing and fill the chart showing who is taking which object. If necessary, they listen to the track again. Then they check their answers in pairs and the teacher does whole class feedback.
Each student gets a picture of a holiday destination. Imagining that they are going on a holiday there, they make a list of things that they need to take with them in the order of significance. After they complete their lists, they tell their partner why they have chosen those objects. T does whole class feedback on the content and the language.
