Description

In this lesson, learners will practice the skills of reading for gist and reading for specific information. This will be followed by a speaking for fluency activity which is based on jigsaw reading.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about choosing a hotel in the context of holiday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a an information gap activity in the context of holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Come into the class wearing a hat and sunglasses Ask SS why I'm wearing these Elicits the words, holiday/ sunny/ hot etc. Ask SS to guess where I am Elicit seme seaside cities in Turkey Ask them where I stay Elicit the word hotel Ask ss if they know what it is called the smaller and cheaper hotels Show the pictures of some hostels in Turkey

Pre-Reading- Reflective Vocabulary Teaching (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show the pictures in Powerpoint presentation and elicit the vocabulary if possible Ask concept checking questions Do word and sentence drilling Write the words on board

While-Reading #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Ask the students to match the comments and the hotels in pairs Tell them to check their answers with another pair Write the answers on WB

While-Reading #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell SS that we will do a pairwork activity Give each student a colored paper,either purple or green Show the SS the sentences sticked on the walls of the classroom A student will sit with the text and a pencil and the other one will be standing When the time starts, the standing pair will run to the wall, memorize the sentence and together with her/his partner, they will decide which hotel it is about.They will write the number of the sentence next to the related paragraph Demonstate the activity with a student -Running dictation Tell SS that greens sit down and purples run (the classroom setting will have been prepared accordingly) Give 10 min and countdown Tell SS to compare their answers with another pair Write the answers on the board Winner group gets a chocolate

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Change the pairs of the SS ,ask them to sit with their new pairs Give a different text for each student in a pair Tell that the other student will make questions, ask these questions to his/her partner and fill in the chart they are given Demonstrate the activity Do some drilling for the questions that SS will make Ask ss to do the switch their roles Ask them to tell whicg hotel they liked and why
