Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about a popular radio drama, Family Business, in the context of family relationships.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a coversation in the context of family relationships.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

At the very begining of the lesson, I am planning to show particular pictures from different soap operas from around the world (most of them, however, are going to be from Turkish soap operas) to bring the topic (soap operas) to the attentions.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

At this stage, I am planning to elicit some of the key words (e.g. ...) that are essential for the while-reading activities with the help of certain pictures and something like an anecdote.

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

1) I am planning to give the students an adapted version of the text on which they are going to see only the text without the pictures of the characters. I am going to ask them to scan through the text and match the pictures (pictures are going to be provided as cut-ups) with the paragraphs. 2) I am going to ask the students to work in pairs and read the introduction paragraph of the text. Then they are going to complete certain sentences based on the information from that paragraph.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

This time, the students are going to be asked to read the whole text. Then they are going to provide answers for eight particular questions (these questions are from the course book).

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

As post-reading activities, 1) the students are going to be asked to read the text again and draw the family tree of the Blake family. 2) the students are going to be asked to role-play particular characters in response to "teacher-made-up" contexts.
