Listening skill lesson
Elementary level

Description

This lesson is designed to develop listening comprehension skills for elementary students through an engaging and interactive activity centered around a quiz show format. Students will listen to an audio recording of a game show, Quiz Night, and work collaboratively to identify whether statements are true or false. Students will begin by understanding the concept of "Quiz Night" via visuals. During the listening stages, they will focus on comprehension and detail, supported by pair and group discussions to reinforce understanding. The lesson concludes with a dynamic group game that mirrors a quiz show; students will prepare 3 questions per group which will be collected to be answered later on in a game format.

Materials

Abc English File 3rd edition Elementary Course Book
Abc Visuals of different game shows

Main Aims

  • To provide listening for spesific information practice in the context of a game show

Subsidiary Aims

  • To create a motivating atmosphere for students to talk as most of them still shy away from speaking in class
  • To provide clarification of the words related to a quiz show

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will show visuals of well known game shows in Turkey and will have a short whole class talk on what a game show is, what type of questions can be seen in a game show.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher will pre-teach some vocabulary to help students understand the text easily. Teacher will try to elicit the words "contest, contestant, roar, average" from students and will provide the words if they cannot come up with it.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information

Students will listen to the first part of the track to understand the rules of the contest and will answer 4 questions while listening. This should not be difficult for them as the topic will be previously discussed in the lead-in part. They will first check answers as pairs and then a whole class check will be done.

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed listening tasks

Teacher will go over the first 2 questions to ensure students understand the use of comparatives. Next, students will work in pairs once again and answer the questions as T/F. Finally, they will listen and check their own answers and will take note of the reasons. A whole class check will be done and the teacher will ask which was the most interesting information for them.

Post-Reading/Listening (15-20 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Teacher will form groups of 4 and will explain that as a class they are going to prepare their own contest. She will explain the rules; each group will write 3 questions in 10 minutes, they will be open ended or T/F questions. Those questions will be collected into a bowl, then each group will take turns answering a question they draw. The winner will get a suprise. This activity will be carried on to the next lesson as there won't be enough time in this lesson.
