Materials

Abc General Activity HO

Main Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a speech in the context of award ceremonies

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of award ceremonies
  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about award giving speech in the context of award ceremonies

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher shows sts a video of an award ceremony. After the video, teacher tell sts to ask the first exercise's Qs in pairs.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

The teacher tells sts to read the second exercise's Qs on the HO and answer them by reading the text. After reading the text, students compare their answers in pairs.

Useful Language (6-8 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

The teacher divides sts into pairs and tells sts to highlight some very classic award speech sentences in the text. Then the teacher tells sts to fill the blanks in exercise 3 by using the words in the box above. After the task, the teacher gets WCFB.

Productive Task(s) (15-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

The teacher tells sts to think of someone they would like to give an award to and write a speech they'd give when presenting the award. This person can be someone they know or someone well known. The teacher first give sts 2 minutes to think about that person and organize their speech in mind. Then the teacher gives them 8-10 minutes to write the speech. (The teacher provides them a list of useful language when writing the speech on the WB.)

Post-Writing (8-10 minutes) • To provide sts an opportunity to share their works and to make some error corrections

The teacher divides sts into groups of four and tells them to share their speeches with their group members. The teacher monitors them while they are on the task. At the end, the teacher gets some feedback from the sts about their group members' speeches and does some error corrections if necessary.
