In this lesson plan, the students will develop their writing skills by writing an email enquiry.

Main Aims

  • To develop writing skills by developing an email enquiry.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop reading skills by reading some adverts.

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

1. Students will be shown pictures about Greek food, horse riding in Provence, and scuba-diving in Malta. The teacher will ask them what do they see in the images. 2. The teacher will send a link to students with three adverts. Teacher will ask the students to read the adverts and think which of the courses they would like to do. Why or Why not? 3. In BOR's students will share their answers with a partner. 4. Then in OC, students will briefly share their answers.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

1. Students will read an email from a woman called Simona asking for information about one of the courses. 2. In Google Forms, the students will identify the layout of the email. They should not send the form. 3. In OC, we will check the sections of the piece of writing.

Useful Language (5-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1. The teacher will tell the students that some of the language that Simona uses is too colloquial for an email to someone she does not know. 2. In Google Forms, the students will match some sections of the letter with formal phrases that they can use. Purpose of letter I am writing with reference to the advertisement ... Asking for information I wonder if you could tell me if / how much, etc. Background information I have been studying/working for X years /since 2015 at/for/in I would like to study/know/be ... Request for action I would be gratefulif you could/would Sending a document Please find attached... Salutations Looking forward to hearing from you Regards / Best wishes 3. We will finally check together as a class.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students will be given 10 minutes to individually write an email asking for further information about one of the other courses. Remind them to respect the sections of the email and to use the phrases for enquiry emails.

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

1. Students will be given five minutes to check the work of their peers with a checklist. 2. As a class we will come back to the main room and say good-bye.
