Subsidiary Aims

Procedure (30-43 minutes)
Show two pictures of Shanghai, then ask students: Where do you think this is? Any clue? Briefly confirm guesses and transition by saying: Today, we’ll learn adjectives to describe cities like Shanghai in the context of business and trade. And this is my hometown.
Use/Adapt the text and design a task that exposes learners to the TL. (adapt Ex 6a on Google Forms). Students will be assigned to fill out a form anonymously; it allows them to experiment with their knowledge.
Learners read the text “City on the Move” individually. Gist task: What is the main idea of this text? (Answer the question in 2 sentences; you can begin with "It describes...) (Expected answer: It describes a city’s role and development in business and trade.) Specific detail task: Identify and underline the adjectives in blue in the text (e.g., “investment,” “polluted”). What do these words tell you about the city in the text? (e.g., “investment” indicates the city is active and constantly developing.) Conduct brief feedback (OCFB).
Provide controlled practice of the TL. (adapt Ex. 1 WB. Pg 36) on Google Forms) Ask students to fill out the gap exercise and pay attention to the form of the words. (2 mins) Pair students to do the peer checking. (2 mins) Share the answers in class. (4 mins)
Students work in groups about the topics as follows: (5 mins) 1. What is your hometown and describe it? 2. What are the two interesting/significant changes in your hometown within 5 years? 3. When you talk after someone, please say - If you're from the same country, do you agree with him/her? You may begin with " I was born in ... It is a small city of ..." or " My hometown is ... It is an international city in the world. " Ask each group to share in class. ( 5 mins)
