Description

In this lesson, students cover a listening about science and science fiction improvements. They are presented with 10 words that will appear in the listening and they will practice speaking at the end of the lesson. The focus is mostly on the words, listening for general understanding and specific information.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about videocalls in the context of scientific inspiration..
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of scientific development in telecommunication.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of improvements in the context of scientific development in telecommunication
  • To provide practice of general vocabulary in the context of scientific development in telecommunication

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students are going to be shown a video about Jetsons which is an old cartoon about a family who lives in the age of technology. And they're going to be asked which of the inventions have come true so far.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

The students are going to put the words in the sentences based on their meanings to have a proper understanding of the whole paragraph. Then they are going to be asked some questions which include the target words. They will answer some questions with their pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will do the first part of the listening activity and go over some words to understand the listening better.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The students are going to answer some more detailed questions related to the texts through the link they are given.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-13 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students are asked to summarize the listening text using some phrases. And then each of the group are given a question to answer before they leave the class.
