Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Sound Detectives Play a short, simple tune (e.g., "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"). Show the lyrics on ppt. Ask students to listen carefully and identify the long /u:/ sound in the song. Guide them to recognize the "oo" sound in "too" and "you."

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Mirror, Mirror Stand in front of the class and clearly pronounce words containing the long /u:/ sound (noodles, choose, blue). Exaggerate the mouth position and the sound. Have students imitate your pronunciation, focusing on the long /u:/ sound.

Highlighting (5-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Sound Sort Show a list of words on the screen, including words with the long /u:/ sound and words with other vowel sounds. Have students identify and group the words containing the long /u:/ sound. Encourage them to explain why they grouped the words together.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Sound Bingo Create a simple bingo card with a grid of 9 squares. Fill each square with a word containing the long /u:/ sound. Call out words from the list. Students mark off the corresponding words on their bingo cards. The first student to get three words in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) shouts "Bingo!"

Semi-Controlled Practice (9-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Sound Hunt Divide the class into two teams. Show the first sentence to both teams and explain the rules. One student from each team will come to the front and write the words shown on the screen. They will ring the bell when they are finished. The first team to identify and correctly pronounce all the words with the long /u:/ sound in the sentence wins a point. Continue with the remaining sentences. To make it more fun: Use funny or silly sentences to keep students engaged. Play music or add a timer while teams are thinking to add a playful element.
