In this lesson students will learn how to respond to sentence completion questions, how to skim and scan a text. They will also recognize paraphrases through using the present simple and the past simple.

Main Aims

  • To raise student's awareness of sentence completion activities in IELTS reading using a text about places and buildings in the context of dream homes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To develop strategies like skimming, scanning and paraphrasing to undertake this task successfully.
  • To provide detailed practices using the present simple and past simple.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask them to describe the place where they live, then ask them what is their dream house? what does it look like?

highlighting new words (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students to get the meaning of new words.

Ask them to look at the pictures and guess the correct letter in group.

Pre-Reading1 (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask them about skimming and scanning, then explain clearly. After that set a question to make sure they got everything.

Pre-Reading2 (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask them about paraphrasing, then explain it. After that set a task to check if they understood or not.

Pre-Reading3 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Tell them all the tips about sentence completion.

While-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ask them to go through the text and complete the sentences. You can model it and do the first question as a sample.

Post-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask them some questions about the tenses which they have read in the text, then ask them to complete the tasks which are in the book.
