Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice for the "a" sound in the context of the story Frank the rat
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide clarification of various objects and animals in the context of the story Frank the rat
Procedure (40-51 minutes)
Introduce slides with various new vocabulary all beginning with the short "a" sound E.g alligator, astronaut, avocado. This is to establish the level of knowledge already attained by the student to allow the teacher to understand how much is new vocabulary. Once the students have guessed (correctly or incorrectly) the teacher will then write the new vocabulary on the blackboard.
The teacher will move through the powerpoint and go through the story of frank the rat. The story is very simple and only introduces a new word each sentence (the word will always have the short "a" sound in). The teacher will drill the new vocabulary to the class focusing on the accuracy of the repetition of the short "a" sound in the word.
Teacher will point to a word in the story, the student reads the word aloud. If the student is correct they will throw the ball at a target. If the ball hits the target they get one point for their team.
Students are given a worksheet with 6 words, 3 of which start with the a sound. The students task is to write the "a"s where they are appropriate.
