Past Simple
4s level

Description

In this lesson students learn to tell about their actions in the past using regular verbs and Past Simple Tense. The lesson starts with questions about their favourite season and reasons for it. Then they guess the main characters' favourite season and can find out the unswer in the text. Then they read the text for the details and have to answer some question. Through guided discovery and the text they state the rule of Past Simple Tense. Later they have controlled practice and semi-controlled practice tasks. Finally they tell what they did last summer or winter.

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher asks students about their favourite season and reasons for it.

Revision (3-5 minutes) • To revise verbs.

The teacher asks the students what they can do in summer, winter, spring and autumn and writes the answers in two collumns: regular verbs and irregular ones. He/she doesn't explain anything here, then he/she deletes the irregular verbs from the whiteboard.

Students have to read the text for the second time and answer the questions below the text.

Teacher asks the students to read the answers to the questions and writes the answers on the whiteboard.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To clarify when The Past Simple tense is used, the teacher asks leading questions. When did all the actions happen: in the past, present or future? - In the past. Do we know exactly when they happened? - Yes, last summer, in August. How do we make verbs in Past Simple? - We have to add ED to the end of the verb. Then students skip the text and highlight all the verbs in Past Simple Tense. They have to state the rule how to add ED to different regular verbs. Listening task where students have to tick the sound they hear at the end of the verbs (-t, -d, -id) and they state the rule of pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

First task is to add the ending to the verbs correctly. Second task is to tick the sound that makes the ending (-t, -d, -id). Students check their answers while listening to the audio.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Tell what the people on the picture did last summer.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students mingle and have to tell the partner what they did last summer in 40 seconds. Then they change partners. After the task some students have to tell what they remember about other students' last summers activities.
