2.1 Ss will review using an Eng-Eng dictionary. Work on phonetic alphabet, pronunciation, and word stress.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review of using an Eng-Eng dictionary in the context of medical terminology

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of phonetic alphabet and word stress in the context of Eng-Eng dictionaries

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

write some words using phonetic alphabet on some pieces of paper and put around the room. Ss have 3 minutes to identify the words. Check in pairs. Check finally on powerpoint.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Have students answer 2.1 B (page 14). Discuss answers in pairs. Elicit problems.

Teach (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Check that Ss know - why there are more than one meaning (B Q2) - can have them look at another word and choose the medical meaning. - how to check word stress in the dictionary (B Q5) - drill 'medicine and me'dicinal - phoenetic alphabet (B Q6, 7) - part of speech (B Q8, Q9, Q10)

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Ss do Exercises C, D, E, F on page 14. Check in pairs.

Free practice (8-11 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss discuss pictures on page 15 using the medical vocabulary reviewed in the lesson. (2.2 Reading, H, page 14)
