Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide process writing practice to write coherent and cohesive paragraphs using sequence words, concluding sentences, topic sentences, and supporting sentences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of first, finally, also, next

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic of writing structured paragraphs and activate prior knowledge.

Show students a short, disorganized paragraph. Ask: “What’s wrong with this paragraph? How could we make it clearer?” Elicit responses about structure, clarity, and logical flow.

Introducing Sequence Words (4-6 minutes) • To familiarize learners with sequence words and their use in writing.

Write examples of sequence words on the board (e.g., first, next, finally). Ask students to categorize them (e.g., beginning, adding, concluding). Provide example sentences showing how these words organize ideas. Use CCQs to elicit the order of the sample task.

Topic Sentences and Supporting Sentences (4-6 minutes) • To help students understand the role of topic and supporting sentences.

Display a well-structured paragraph (e.g., the example in the provided material). Highlight the topic sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence. Discuss their functions and ask students to identify them in pairs.

Writing Task (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Provide a worksheet with mixed-up sentences. Students reorder the sentences to form a coherent paragraph. Check answers as a class, focusing on the use of sequence words and the flow of ideas.

Freer Practice (8-13 minutes) • To allow students to apply what they have learned in a creative way.

Prompt: “Write a paragraph about your favorite place to relax, using sequence words and proper paragraph structure.” Encourage students to draft individually, ensuring their paragraph includes a topic sentence, supporting sentences, sequence words, and a concluding sentence.

Feedback and Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' writing and reinforce learning.

Students exchange paragraphs and give peer feedback using a checklist (e.g., Does it have a topic sentence? Are sequence words used?). Teacher provides whole-class feedback on common errors and strong examples.
