past continuous
A2 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification and practice of the past continuous tense to describe ongoing actions and interrupted actions in the past, in the context of travel plans
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide practice of listening skills by practicing listening for gist and specific information about travel problems (e.g., crowded trains, delays, traffic).
Procedure (33-46 minutes)
Show pictures related to travel problems (crowded trains, traffic jams, etc.) and ask: "What do you think is happening in these pictures?" Elicit student responses, introducing the topic of travel problems.
Teach relevant travel-related vocabulary (e.g., delayed, crowded, traffic jam, flight delay). Use visuals, examples, and CCQs to ensure understanding.
Play a recording or read a passage describing a travel experience (e.g., someone experiencing a flight delay or being stuck in traffic). Ask: "What is the main problem this person is facing?" After listening, discuss briefly in pairs and share responses as a class.
Play the recording again, and ask students to listen carefully for specific information: what does the woman say about......? Students listen and fill out a worksheet or answer the questions.
Highlight sentences from the listening text that use the past continuous. Example: "Was sitting on the toilet, when the turbulence started." Elicit the function of the past continuous (was/were + verb-ing), by CCQs.
Provide students with a gap-fill exercise where they must complete sentences with the correct form of the past continuous. Students complete the exercise individually, then check in pairs, and provide feedback as a class.
In groups, students have a conversation they try to explain the problems by looking at a picture (e.g., missed the plane, flat tire), using the past continuous to explain what they were doing at the time and what happened. Example: "we were driving when we got a flat tire." After the description, ask students to share their stories with the class.
