Final TP8
Upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, SS will extensively deal with the topic of advertisements. It's easily connected to every day life and I will set the context showing them four very famous adverts that they should be able to recognize, Afterwards, SS will look at other 3 adverts without a slogan and they will briefly think about one per each, working in pairs. This activity will be useful for the end of the class, which will then focus both on vocabulary trying to find out the meaning of some specific words related to the context and then answering some questions in a sort of advert analysis after a Red Bull commercial viewing. This will be realized in a short speaking stage working as a pre-listening before to deal with two tasks, one for gist, the other for detailed listening. Thanks to a recording about advertising strategies, SS will then pick their slogans again and try to modify them according to the suggested tricks acquired.

Materials

Abc Global Upper-intermediate coursebook

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, SS would have practiced their receptive skill of listening both through a video and a recording about advertising

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of the lesson SS would have practiced their productive skill of speaking
  • By the end of the lesson, SS would have learnt and practiced some new vocabulary about advertising

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To get SS interested and familiar with a context

After the morning greetings, I will project the first of four visual adverts on the WB, asking the SS to recognize what it is. I will then focus on one of them trying to elicit the words "slogan" and "logo" by indicating these parts of the advert. SS will then work in pairs. I will give them two adverts without a slogan asking them to brainstorm and write one for each image. This activity won't receive any feedback right now, since it will be useful for the end of the lesson.

Vocabulary task #1 (3-5 minutes) • To get the SS in touch with some new vocabulary related to the topic

SS will be given a HO with 4 questions which need to be matched with a pair of new vocabs related to advertising. They will work in pairs as well, just guessing about the related area. Feedback will be realized through a WC discussion.

Vocabulary task #2 (3-5 minutes) • To get SS in touch with the new vocabulary in a more detailed way

SS are now divided in 2 groups (if more than 4 people) according to some of the brands previously showed in the adverts (apple/nike) They will receive some flashcards with the vocabs and their definitions. They will match them on the WB. At the end of the practice, I will give them an answers key to check whether they are right or not.

Pre-listening task (3-5 minutes) • To get a freer practice of the vocabulary preparing for the next stage

SS will now watch a 30seconds Red Bull commercial answering some questions written on the WB to practice the vocabs just acquired. What's the brand name? Is it a commercial? Which could be the target audience? Do you think the slogan is effective? Do you find it a memorable advert? They will first discuss the answers in pairs, then with the WC.

Listening for gist task (3-6 minutes) • To let the SS get a general idea from the recording

SS will now listen to a recording dealing with the techniques to make a good advertising slogan. They will first have a look at the HO with 5 tips they have to fill in. The answers will come by a WC feedback projecting the exercise on the board.

Detailed listening task (3-6 minutes) • To let the SS get some specific information from the recording

SS will receive a second HO with some slogans to be matched with the previous tips. They will work in pairs. Listening to the recording for the second time will work as a feedback.

Follow-up/Closure (5-10 minutes) • To get the SS another chance to practice what they have learnt during the lesson in a funny and creative way

The pairs are looking to their slogans again and read them loud. Most probably they won't follow any of the tips of the listening! So, they will now re-write them trying to make a rhyme. The pairs will then mingle around the class and present their adverts each other.
