Procedure (36-45 minutes)
After a quick check on how everyone is and how their weekend was, I will share my screen with the first slide containing pictures of a dress code, no parking sign, paying bills, the beginning time of work, and a no cell phone sign. Ss will openly talk about the photos. After establishing that the photos represent obligations and prohibitions, I will ask each students about an obligation they her in their life.
Gist- I will share the next slide containing an email about some rules for a new job. I will share the gist Qs with the Ss and they will have two minutes to read the text while thinking about the questions. After, I will ask them to openly express thier answers to the Qs: Who is the email between? (John, the new employee and Sandra his supervisor) What is the reason for the email? (to welcome John to the new job and tell him about some rules) Intensive- I will next share a google form with the Ss. The form has the text of the email on out as well. They will read the Email again and answer T/F/NG questions having to do with sentence level meaning. specifically the sentences containing the TL of obligations, prohibitions and lack of obligations. (is necessary, need to, have to, can't, must, supposed to, not allowed to) Ss will have 4 minutes to complete the task. After we will quickly check answers for disagreements.
Meaning- I will reshare my screen with the Google Slides. Students will now see the slide contain a table categorizing column into obligations, lack of obligations, semi-obligations and prohibitions. The Ss will be assigned slides and be given 3 minutes to put the TL at the bottom of the slide into the correct column. After we will quickly check the answers for disagreements. Answer key: obligations: you need to be in the office at 9am, you must be back at 1pm. lack of obligations: It isnt necessary to wear a suit, you dont have to eat there semi obligation, semi-prohibition: We are not supposed to wear T-shirts or jeans, We’re supposed to finish work and leave at 5pm. Prohibitions: You can’t stay later than 7pm, We’re not allowed to work more than 2 hours of overtime. Form- Next the students will be shown the slides addressing the form of statements of obligation and prohibition. Here I will ask Ss to indicate modal verbs and base verbs. Pronunciation- I wil introduce the pronunciation slide which highlights the connected words have to and has to. Here they will also be shown the non IPA phonetic /haffta/ and /hassta/ to help them see the pronunciation. Ss will listen and repeat.
In this stage I will introduce the google form for controlled practice. Here the students will be instructed on two parts. In part one, students will rewrite a sentence to mean the same thing using a given word in parentheses. ICQs. Do we write a new sentence (yes) Do we change the meaning of the sentence? (no) Must we use the word in parentheses? (yes) Answer Key Part 1: 1. it is necessary to be in the office at 9am. 2.You don´t have to wear a suit. 3. In this stage students will have time for freer practice using the language. I will introduce the final slide which has a chart with rules and codes about a new job. One student will play the new employee asking questions about a rules and regulations. Another student will play the supervisor answering questions based on the table of rules. Students will work with a partner for 5 mins. Then we will switch partners and roles and take another 5 mins. I will monitor the free practice and take a couple minutes at the end to address common errors I observed if necessary.
