Introducing young learners letter Dd

Description

In this lesson students learn the few letter Dd. The lesson starts with the ice-breaker: riddles about animals, one of them is a riddle about dog. The story is: Dog meets the kids, telling them that it needs help to find something important. They find a lot of words starting with the sound Dd. Lesson lasts 25 minutes. There should be a drilling part where kids practice to find words that begin with the sound Dd, also there is some writing practice too. In the end of the lesson kids can say at least 3 words starting with Dd.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Telling riddles, kids guess

Revision (2-3 minutes) • To review the materials we learned on our previous lessons

Dog puppet comes. Asks for help: it needs to find something, but it can’t remember what! Maybe kids can help? Kids look around the classroom and find the cards with different pictures on them, trying to tell which letter the word begins with

Lead in (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target

The dog remembers that something it’s trying to find starts with the letter Dd. The dog gives kids a puzzle (review numbers on the bottom of the puzzle pieces). They see dinosaurs on the puzzle.

Body (3-4 minutes) • To provide practice of separating d-words out of other words

The dog finds a magnifying glass, looks on the puzzle and ask the kids what they see on it. Dinosaurs. They start with D! Kids get magnifying glasses and look for all the words starting with learned letter around the classroom. Drilling, say D-D-D- doll, D-D-D- door and other.

Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with writing practice

The dog sniffs (review senses) some papers under the desk. These are worksheets: handwriting of letter Dd. Teacher gives students some instructions.

Production (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of discussing the new letter

The dog sees how kids fill up their worksheets, and remembers that it’s not a regular dog, but a detective dog and it needs to find dinosaurs’ eggs! Kids help to find the nest with eggs. They poor vinegar on the eggs and see how eggs with d-words pictures are hatching. Ask each other what they see and describe their thoughts with partner.

Wrap up (1-2 minutes) • Students practice to write and say the new letter, finish the lesson

The dog is happy, praises and thanks students. Asks them to remind how to write Dd with their fingers in the air and say 3 words starting with sound D so they can walk out the classroom and go play.
