Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of men crying
Procedure (37-45 minutes)
T will come to class and will ask Ss "How are you?". She will say she is fine but her mood changes all the time. She will put the pictures on her face and say "For example I am ....."and will wait for the Ss to complete the sentence. She will try to elicit the words from Ss and will help them if necessary especially with the words "bored" and "nervous" by writing the first letter of the words. She will try to clarify the meaning by giving examples. Then, to make it more clear with Ss, she will ask questions like "Am I happy now?" while showing them the sad picture. Then, T drills the words and writem them on board.
The students will be given strips of paper in which there will be situations and feelings written. For example, on one of the papers it will say "You are in an exam" and on another one it will say "nervous". What they are going to do is to match the situations with the feelings. Possible ICQ: 1) Are you going to match the situations with feelings? Then, as students were busy on the task, T will write the feelings on the board. After all the students finish, T will ask them to come to the board and write the situations under the appropriate feeling.
T will show on the W/B the pictures in the book of famous men crying. T will ask Ss why do they think the men are crying and will try to elicit answers. Then, T will ask Ss questions to prepare them for the gist activity. She will ask them questions like "Why do men usually cry?" or "Do men cry more now than in the past?" and writes possible answers on the board.
T will ask the students to read the text to find if their ideas written on the board have been mentioned in the text or not. The students will read first and they will be asked to discuss in pairs. Then, T will get a whole class feedback from the students.
Students will be given strips of papers in which there are titles written. They will be asked to read the text one more time and choose the best title for the text in pairs. The titles are as follows: Men never cry, Crying- it’s a man’s thing, Crying- good for your health, Men and sports Then, T will again get a whole class feedback from the students.
Ss will read the text again. Then, in pairs, they will be asked to write T or F next to the statements in page 67 exercise 1. To take feedback, T will ask Ss only to raise their hands if they think number 1 is True or False. She will do this for all the questions and then go over with the problematic ones if there are any.
T will divide Ss into groups by giving each of them a number. Then, she will make them sit in circles. After that, T will give Ss the handouts in which there are some discussion questions about the topic. Ss will discuss the questions and try to answer them in their groups. While Ss are discussing, T will monitor them closely but only interferes if the conversation breaks down. After Ss finish discussing, T will ask different Ss around the class to answer the questions.
If there is extra time at the end, T will say to Ss "I've heard some sentences today" and will write them on the board. And, She will ask Ss what is wrong with these sentences and will elicit answers from the students.
