Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about Medical Faculty curriculum in the context of first lecture at university

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of language used for giving and asking for definitions in the context of class lectures

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start on time - just to bring Ss into the class. Review of previous lesson vocabulary. And definitions of things. KAHOOT name: Eng for Med Definitions

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show picture of a doctor on pp. What does this picture bring to mind? (Who is it? Dr.House from a TV series. What is the series about?) When you think of Dr.House (the doctor and the series) - Ask Ss "Do you think this is an accurate idea of what medicine is?" Ask Ss "What is Medicine?" "How can we define medicine? "What definition would you give of medicine?" You are going to listen to a lecture to some medical students on their first day of university. The lecture is entitled 'What is medicine?'. In pairs discuss - What ideas will be in this lecture? (prediction) Think back to your first lecture from the dean. What did he/she talk about? Take up: what do you think the lecture will be about? (discuss in pairs). How can you define words in an academic setting? Show the PowerPoint examples.??????????????????????????????? Not sure this is relevant to the aims of this lesson.

While-Listening #1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

While-Listening Track 1 (1.2 Listening B) (1:14 min) Listen to part 1 of the lecture and answer the multiple choice question B, page 8. (Play through each part twice if required a second time. Complete this task before moving on to the second task). Ss check with their partner.

Pre & While-Listening #2 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Pre-Listening In pairs, discuss question from 1.2 Listening C (Q1). While-Listening Track 2 (1.2 Listening C) (1:09 min) Listen to part 2 of the lecture and answer C page 8 Ss check with their partner.

Pre & While-Listening #3 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Pre-Listening In pairs, discuss questions 1 and 2 from 1.2 Listening D (Q1&2). While-Listening Track 3 (1.2 Listening D) (1:42 min) Listen to part 3 of the lecture and check your predictions for questions in D, page 8. Ss check with their partner. Take up - How are the meanings of cell and scan similar in meaning in general English compared to medical English?

Pre & While-Listening #4 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Pre-Listening In pairs, discuss question from 1.2 Listening E (Q1). While-Listening Track 4 (1.2 Listening E) (1:40 min) Listen to part 4 of the lecture and check your answer to E, page 8 Ss check with their partner.

Post-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Working alone, write a definition of anatomy (F, page 8). Check your definition in pairs. Discuss in pairs the questions in G, page 8. WC: What words did you hear in part 4 of the lecture that were new to you? What words would you like to ask the definition or explanation of? (e.g. gross anatomy, microscopic anatomy, naked eye, histology (organisation of tissues), cytology (structure of cells), histopathology (disease in cells), pharmacology (drugs, how they work and what they do, how the functions of cells are modified due to the drugs), pharmacy (scientific/legal/managerial aspects of providing medicines to patients).
