Description

In this lesson, students develop their reading skills for comprehension and for details. This lesson starts with a discussion about advertisement for children. This is followed by reading for gist and details in the context of advertising for children. Then the teacher focus on MFA of some key words before students do a follow-up activity in which they watch adverts and ask and answer questions in pairs.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about advertising for children in the context of advertising

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of advertisement lexis in the context of advertising for children

Procedure

Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To introduce the topic of advertisement and get students' interest.

I will stick six pictures of six different products for the same company before students come to class. I will tell them that this company will advertise for their products in this language school. Then students give their opinion.

Introducing the theme (10-12 minutes) • to introduce the theme of the context of the reading text

Students will watch two commercials for children and work in pairs to discuss a few questions about adverts. Then they report to class. After that, students work in small groups and discuss more questions about advertising. Again once they have finished, there will be an open class feedback about their opinions.

Reading for Gist (4-6 minutes) • To enable students improve their reading for gist

Student read a text about advertising for children and choose the best summary of the text. Then they check answers with their partners and report to class.

Reading for Details (5-7 minutes) • To give students the chance to improve their reading for details

Students read the text about advertising for children again and answer comprehensions questions. Then they check in pairs and and report to class.

Clarification (6-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form, and pronunciation of the key words.

In this exercise, students check the meaning of the highlighted words in the text. Then I check that students understanding the meaning of the key words by asking them CCQs. I also focus on form and pronunciation f these words by modelling and drilling.

Follow-up Activity (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language.

Students work in pairs to talk about advertisements. one student sits with their back to the white board and their partner sits opposite to them. The students facing the board watch a commercial and describe what they are seeing to their partners. Then the ones with their backs to the board ask them questions related to the advert. Then they switch roles and watch another commercial and follow the same instructions.

Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To highlight the common errors and the language chunks that need correction and reformulation

I will monitor students working on the follow-up activity and write down some language chunks on the board to correct and reformulate.
