CELTYL Lesson 1- How to Classify Animals
A1-2 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
By the end of the lesson, students will have been introduced to and practised identifying features of 8 different classifications of animals, eg: mammals
Subsidiary Aims
-
By the end of the lesson, learners will have practised writing/spelling the new vocabulary by playing a game using mini whiteboards
Procedure (35-42 minutes)
T will tell students that though they have just learned 2 categories of animals (vertebrates and invertebrates), they can further classify these into 8 categories. Elicit any that the students might know and write them up for later.
Give students animal cut up cards and ask them put the animals in pairs based on their similarities. Instruct them that they should get 8 pairs of animals. Feedback and check. Ask students why they paired the animals together (ie: they both have feathers)
Introduce the lexis on the IWB and help students identify the names of the groups. Elicit explanation from the stronger learners. Match the names with the animal types. Drill pronunciation. Flexi stage: Give learners mini whiteboards and ask them to add one animal to each category (as a race)
Read prepared sentences about the classes of animals (eg: It has got feathers. It has got wet skin). Students race to write the name of the animal on their mini whiteboard. First correct answer gets 1 point plus a bonus point for correct spelling.
Instruct students to choose a class of animals. Their group mates must ask questions to determine what class they have chosen (e.g. has it got scales? Does it feed it's babies with milk?)
