To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of hotels
Procedure (36-50 minutes)
Ask ss what type of items they can find in a hotel/hotel room Elicit answers, list on the board. e.g. Restaurant, bar, swimming pool, rooms (hotel),bed, chair, arm chair, desk, books, lamp, minibar-mini fridge, (hotel room) Ask them how they could form a sentence. write the following on the board: __________ _____ a swimming room in the hotel. __________ _____ 150 rooms in the hotel. Ask students to predict the words which would fill in the blanks, elicit answers. Explain why we use there is, there are, talk about their meaning
Inform ss that they will complete a fill-in the gaps exercise, they will need to complete the gaps with either the positive or negative versions of there is there are Q1 on the worksheet, Ss will need to give the negative or positive versions as part of the answers Ss work individually, peer check, WC feedback
inform ss that they will be putting sentences into question form do one example private rooms? Ask students if the above is singular or plural, so will they use, is? will they use, are? Are there any private rooms? Ask ss to work on Q2 Ss work individually, peer check their work, whole class feedback
Show students the way the words, there is - becomes there's Inform ss they will be reading a text, then ask each other the questions they formed in the previous task Ask ss to look at q3 from the handout and start reading Monitor and note down any language errors for error correction/reformulation later
inform ss they will do a speaking activity they will invent an unusual hotel. They will need to: - find a name for it - list the type of facilities - inform where it will be located(on a bus, on the beach, in a plane) - the prices (List the above information on the board) Once finished ss will talk to the other group and exchange information encourage ss to use the language they learned in class e.g. There are 1000 rooms in our hotel, there aren't any special rooms
OPTIONAL STAGE Students come up to the board and talk about the feautures of their hotels, (encourage them to use the new language).
