Procedure (35-45 minutes)
The teacher tells the students that he studied every day on the 3 day holiday last weekend. In order to further engage the students to the context of "last weekend", The teacher asks 3 Target Language CCQs to the students for PW discussion: - How was your holiday? - What did you do? - Who were you with? * The teacher doesn't interfere with the discussion, only observing at this stage.
The teacher sticks 8 pictures to the WB. The first picture is of the main character Mustafa who's in a wheelchair with his arm and leg in cast. Around the first picture on the WB there will visual representations (pictures) of the vocabulary present in the live listening which the students are assumed to not know. The words corresponding with the visuals, will be sticked on another side of the WB. The teacher will mention that the first picture is his friend Mustafa. He will ask what the students think happened to Mustafa by looking at the visuals posted around Mustafa's picture. The students will be given 2 minutes to match the words with the 7 visuals present on the WB in PW. Some CCQ's will be done for difficult vocabulary: Eg: National Holiday: Do you work that day? No. Is it a holiday? Yes. Is it a holiday only in Istanbul? No, all of Turkey is on holiday. *After all the eliciting is finished, the students will be asked again what the listening could be about.
The teacher tells the students to listen to the story. They are not to take any notes or write anything, only listen. *In the first time, the students will listen for gist. After the first listening, the teacher will ask the students what they've understood so far. Before the re-listening the teacher will give HOs to students which contain "Wh- Questions Exercises" about the live listening. While listening, the students will try to write the answers to these questions. They will first do FB in pairs and after about 2-3 minutes they will do a WCFB.
The teacher will draw a chart on the WB, dividing it into 4 sections: Question Words, Auxiliary Verb, Subject and Verb 1. Under the "Question Words" category the teacher will first quickly right the representative meaning of each word in a few words for the students to guess which word could it be. The representative words are: (Place = Where, Time = When, Object = What, Because = Why, Method = How) * The teacher will especially highlight the fact that even though the sentence has a past-meaning the last category on the chart (the verb) is always in the base form (Verb 1).
The teacher will give the students a HO which has "Wh- Questions" that the students will have to correctly turn it into a question. After they have correctly made the questions, they will need to match the questions with the answer given below their HO. *They will also use this exercise sheet on the next stage (mingle).
The students will use the previous exercise sheet and do a mingle discussion using the TL.
