Description

In this lesson, students will practice reading based on three texts about a journey in the context of beaches. The first text is about a lagoon in Thailand, the second is about Bondi Beach, Australia, and the last one is about Portinatx Beach, Ibiza. Students will learn new vocabularies in this context like, for example, lagoon, coral, and canopies.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, detailed and scan reading practice using a text about Beaches in the context of Journey

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a talk in the context of Journey
  • To provide clarification and practice of holiday in the context of journey

Procedure

Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To introduce the context of the reading text about journey.

There are three pictures of beaches in the lesson from canopies in Thailand, Bondi Beach in Australia and Portinatx in Ibiza. In addition to, I will use CCQs to get students' attention to the context of the lesson, for instance, what are there in picture A, picture B and picture C? boats, people, sand, water and so on and what's the common thing among these three picture? Journey. Then I will ask them to figure out the context of the lesson which is a journey.

Reading for Gist (2-3 minutes) • To match the first text with the pictures A, B or C.

I will give them one minute to skim the text to match the text with one of the pictures from the lesson and to get the general idea of the text. after they finish skimming, they have to work in pair to figure out the right answer and match the text with the correct picture which is photo B.

Pre-Reading Vocabularies (2-5 minutes) • To learn new vocabularies in the context of a journey.

I will highlight the new vocabularies, the students may encounter in the reading passage that they are about to scan. some of these new vocabularies will be introduced by pictures like " lagoon, coral and canopy. I will show the students a picture of a lagoon and they have to figure out the meaning; and also I will use CCQs to differenciate the meaning with lake for example, Is a lagoon as size as a lake? maybe. Is al lagoon as deep as a lake? No. then for pronouciation, I will use drilling to make sure they pronounce it well. as for coral and canopy, the same procidure will be applied.

Reading for details (7-9 minutes) • To answer questions about the text.

Now, after they learnt new vocabularies related to the text, students will scan the text looking for details to answer the questions those follow up the passage. I will answer the first question as a model to let them know how to answer the rest questions. the question are "true or false", and if false they have to try to correct. they will work as pairs to answer the questions. after they finish, they will answer the questions and write them down on the board, if the answer is false, students will write them themselves on the board.

Reading for gist (2-3 minutes) • To match the picture a and c with the two texts.

I will ask the students to read quickly the two texts in one minute to work with their pairs to match the text with the pictures a and c. after they finish will answer the question which is matching the texts with the pictures.

Pre-Reading Vocabularies # 1 (2-3 minutes) • To learn new vocabularies regarding the new two texts in the context of a journey.

I will define or show the new vocabularies to the students either by their difination or picture. Students have to figure out the meaning of these words. the new vocabularies are "overlooking and spectacular" which they will be difined and giving synonyms as well. and the words "sorrounded" I will use gestures to explain the meaning and with this word, students may have problem with spelling and pronounciation. I will make sure they can spell it well with double "r" and use drilling for pronounciation. in addition to the words "cliff and cove", I will use pictures to elicit the meaning.

Reading for guessing the meaning from context. (7-10 minutes) • To guess the meaning of the context and expressions to fill in the gaps.

I will ask the students to read the two texts about Bondi Beach, Australia and Portinatx Beach, Ibiza then to work in pairs to fill in the gaps with the words and expressions from the box above. After they finish answering and filled up the gaps, I will write the answer on the board.

Semi-Controlled Speaking Practice. (8-10 minutes) • To practice speaking with the context of a journey.

I will give the students handouts with questions on them, students will work in pairs to answer the questions which are talking about places in your city or country that are unspoilt for example. students have to talk to answer the questions. after they finish with their partner, they have to work with a new partner to share as much as possible ideas and vocabularies with the context of a journey.
