Description

In this lesson, Ss will do some controlled reading , learn prepositions to describe places, vocabulary and do some speaking practise in the context of travelling.

Materials

Abc Journey
Abc pictures of the book and film The Beach by Alex Garland

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about The Beach in the context of Journey
  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about The Beach in the context of Journey

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Journey
  • To provide clarification of prepositions in the context of Journey

Procedure

Warm up (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will write a question on the WB " It's better to travel than to arrive" To ask the Ss what they think about it? & What does it mean ? Do you agree or not ? To tell them the journey someone makes can be more enjoyable than arriving at their destination.

Lead in (5-7 minutes) • To personalize the topic and engage the students interest

T will asks the students what is the difference between ' to go travelling ' and ' to travel ' to go travelling : a longer journey, maybe more than one country, taken for a reason such as to learn English in England travel : general explanation of going somewhere ---- T will hand out the list of reason for travelling T will ask the students Have you ever travelled for any of these reasons? or find your own reason / It will be PW T will give an example about herself : I went travelling to broaden my experience of the world T will asks Do you know the meaning of to broaden my experience of the world? If they don't know, T will introduce the meaning Feedback Session: T will ask some student's reason and if they do mistake correct them.

Pre-Reading (5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will post the pictures of the book and film "The Beach" by Alex Garland to elicit. T asks Ss; What is that ? Is this a book ? Is this a movie? Have you ever watched this film or read this book before ? Do you have any idea about the context ? Look at the title > The Beach ? What do you think ? T will explain the context of the book and film.

While Reading (20 minutes) • To engage the students into the text

T will hand out the reading and says this is a passage from the book. T will point out the box under the reading. There are some vocabulary to help Ss to understand the text. T wants them to find why the author went travelling? T wants them to look at the text and vocab box quickly in 3 min to find the reason of the author. ----- T wants them to look at the exercise 1 in their HO First, the students will read the sentences that are given and T wants them to read the text again detailed T wants them to find out which sentences are true or false T wants them to check with their partner next to them T will encourage the Ss to correct the false statement

Post-Reading (5 minutes) • To encourage the students to have small conversation

T will write a question on the WB " Does travel really help people to escape from their problems? Do you agree or not ? Work with partners ---- T will encourage the Ss to share their opinions.

Focus on Functional Language / Pre- Speaking (15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning and usage of some prepositions,which helps the students to describe a place

T will post the picture of compass and ask the Ss what is this ? T will show the directions to the Ss T will give an example about a place where she has been before. - I have been to Kaş. It's in the south-west of Turkey.It' far from İstanbul. T will ask the Ss where is Antalya ? to check them to understand or not. T will introduce the chart that that are given in their HO ( prepositions & expressions) T asks the students to make a list of places they have travelled to in pairs. This could be places from Turkey or other world countries. + T wants them to choose 5 places in their list and wants them to describe each other. They can use the expressions in the chart. T wants them to ask questions each other the reason of their travelling, too. In the end of the conversation, T will asks the Ss a questions : Who has been in the mot exotic city? Who has been in the most boring country or city ? etc.
