Ss work in pairs to discuss the question 'What do you use the internet for?'. Several answers are written on the WB. Project slide of 'Introduction' paragraph. How do their notes match? In groups Ss discuss for one minute 'How did it all begin?' Each group is asked their ideas.

Ss are distributed as evenly as possible to each table. All five texts of Five Internet Firsts are distributed to each group. The five headings are given to the groups and they first work together to match the headings to the numbered texts. Answers are written on WB as feedback.

Pass out additional texts to each table/group so that each table now has just one text to read. Set task. Students work alone. Set a 5 minute time limit. Hand out worksheets to ss with space to write answers for the following information: The names and nationalities of the people What and where was the first Important dates and events in its history Any other interesting information (Tell ss to add any missing information to their notes). Ss talk to each other and peer check their answers. Monitoring but no FB is given at this stage.
