Description

In this the sts will practice used to/would through a reading text called now here,now there.. The sts will find some examples from the text about past habits and discuss the form and the meaning.. After focusing on the language the sts will write a paragpaph about their childhood using an anecdote about someone's memories of the school holidays during the summer when they were a child.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of used to/would in the context of past habits

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a free writing activity about past habits and childhood. To give Ss practise in speaking for fluency

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set a context and engage the Ss.

Give Ss a handout written some 'firsts' like "your first English lesson, your first crush.." and ask the Ss to discuss them with their partners.Ask the quesion: Which of these ‘firsts’ do you remember ? Take some general FB.

Lead in (5-7 minutes) • To attract the sts attention about their childhood

Show some pictures about the habits, fashion, games and some tv programmes from their childhood on projector and encourage the Ss to talk and discuss these pictures.Try to elicit more about their childhood memories.

Underline sentences in the text with used to/would (5-10 minutes) • To test their background about used to/would

Ask the Ss to find some sentences in the text where the people talk about their past habits and childhood. Ss work in pairs and try to find sentences with used to/would. Monitor-pay attention that they are on the task. Take some general FB aim to raise awarness about used to/would. If they have any confussion write some sentences on WB check the meaning and form ask the Ss if they can form it or not. If necessary ask CCQs

Controlled writing activity (5-10 minutes) • To check their understanding about used to/would

Give the handout to the Ss.Ss work indivually to fill the blanks then ask them to check their answer with their partner. Monitor to avoid any confussion about would/used to as in some sentences both can be used. If they have any problems write some examples on WB and try to clarify the siituation.

Semi-controlled Writing Activity (10-15 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to produce a writing on what they've leraned

Give the Ss a task with an anecdote about someone's memories of the school holidays during the summer when they were a child. Ask Ss to think about any similarities to their own summer holidays when they were children. Ask the Ss to work together and create an anecdote by using used to/would.When they are ready put Ss into pairs or small groups of three ask them to swop their papers and try to correct them grammatically. Monitor pay attention to grammatical mistakes.Finally get general FB

Optional (5-7 minutes) • To give Ss extra practice about used to/would

Give Ss the worksheet from Global Workbook.Ss work in pairs to find out if the sentences are grammatically correct or not. Second worksheet the Ss will complete the sentences with used to+verb,would+verb or the past simple of the verb in the brackets. Monitor if they have any quesitons. Get FB by asking if they have any problems.
