Main Aims
-
To provide review and practice of the affirmative form of there is/are in the context of cities
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a form of presentation about a favourite city.
Procedure (33-46 minutes)
Ss are divided into Barcelona and Prague groups and are asked to give information about those cities that they remember from the previous text.
T writes Barcelona and Prague on the board and elicits sentences which start with there is/are from the Ss. One student from each group comes to the board and write sentences with TL. T highlights the form on the WB and elicits the difference between there is/are from Ss.
T clarifies meaning if necessary and highlights the use of singular nouns with 'there is' and that of plural nouns with 'there are'. Contracted forms are also shown on the WB and the class drills the TL..T shows three pictures of places in Baku and Ss make sentences with there is/are.
Ss individually fill in gaps in the sentences about Istanbul, and then check their answers with their partners. T asks if they can make more sentences about Istanbul.
T hands out A and B sheet to each S in pairs. Ss sit back to back and describe their picture to their partner. They have to find 7 differences between pictures. WC feedback is provided
Ss in a group of 3 decide about the city they know well and prepare presentation about it. Firstly, they write sentences in three categories(getting there, where to stay, things to do and see) using TL. After they are ready, Ss present their city to the whole class.
T writes Ss' sentences on the WB and asks whether they are correct or incorrect.
