Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Examining the extrovert ideal in the context of personality traits

  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about personality traits in the context of adjetives

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Write 'Extrovert' and 'Introvert' on the board. - Students brainstorm characteristics of each in pairs. - Elicit and write ideas on the board.

Teaching Vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • Prepare students for the text by pre-teaching vocabulary (using MPF).

- Focus on 5 key words: Overlooked, Contemplative, Discrimination, Stand out, Charismatic. - Present meaning (eliciting examples), pronunciation (choral drilling), and form (word class/structure). - Use gap-fill tasks and concept-checking questions.

Reading for gist (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Gist reading task. 1. Provide a printed copy of the text. 2. Ask students to read/skim for 2 minutes and select the main idea from three given options: a) Introverts are overlooked in society. b) Society undervalues introverts but can learn from them. c) Extroverts are more successful than introverts. Materials Text and multiple-choice options handout. Feedback Students compare answers in pairs, then confirm as a class.

Reading for detail (14-16 minutes) • Practice scanning and detailed reading with comprehension questions.

Answer specific questions based on the text. comprehension questions: 1. Why does Cain think society favours extroverts? 2. What are the challenges introverts face in professional settings? 3. What benefits do introverts bring to workplaces? 4. Why does Cain criticize brainstorming? 5. What does Cain mean by 'collect your thoughts'? Materials Text and question worksheet. Instruction 'Read the text carefully and answer the questions.' Feedback Peer check answers, then confirm as a class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Group discussion or written reflection. Groups discuss these questions: 1. Do you agree with Cain’s ideas? Why or why not? 2. Can you think of situations where being introverted/extroverted was helpful or challenging? Materials Discussion prompts or writing templates. Feedback Groups share key points or read their paragraphs aloud.
