Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To engage the students with the topic of calendar by introducing it to them

To lead the group into the topic, the teacher begins with the '20 questions' game. The teacher says that he's got something in his pocket (or envelope) and tells the students to guess what it is by asking Yes/No questions, eg Is it a mobile phone? Is it made of metal? Since the aim of this activity is to engage the students' interest, the teacher should not worry much about accurate language as long as the questions are understood. At the end the teacher shows the calendar as our topic for the lesson.

Pre-Reading (3-7 minutes) • To pre-teach students vocabulary they may need to complete the next reading task

The teacher writes on the board the words, which he/she assumes students do not know, but will need in the next reading task, checks with the students if they are familiar to them by asking 'What is it?' and receiving and open class feedback. If an unknown word is met, explains the meaning to students. The teachers drills the pronunciation of the words with class and individually, if needed. Those words are calendar, Western countries, South Asia, Islamic countries, month, year, earth, sun, moon, festival.

Reading for Gist (3-5 minutes) • To practise skim reading of a text

Reading ex. 1 p. 24. The teacher gives Ss the text face down.shows students the four world regions mentioned in the exercise and text "When is New Year's Day?". The teacher shows Ss the question and the text and gives instruction to find the answer to the question and tells them they will have 1 minute for it. The students have to check their answers in pairs. After that students do WC FB.

Reading for Detail (5-7 minutes) • To practice reading for detail in the given context

Reading ex. 2 p. 24 The teacher gives instruction to read and listen to the text again and answer the questions in the exercise. The teacher shows the questions to students and demonstrates the first two. After completing, students check their answers in pairs. Open class feedback.

Grammar (3-5 minutes) • To introduce the TL and new grammar to students - how to form the negative in present simple

The teacher asks students to read the sentences in the grammar box (p. 25). To reinforce, the teacher writes the following on the board: I / you / we / they _________ + verb He / she / it _________ + verb The teacher asks students to complete the form with the correct word.

Controlled Practice (2-3 minutes) • To practise use of the negative present simple based on the read text

The teacher shows students the sentences in the handout and asks to circle the correct option in each one. WC FB
