Description

In this lesson students will practice speaking about accomplishments and achievements.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in an informal conversation in the context of accomplishments and achievements

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice using time-buying interjections as well adverbs and adjectives of emphasis in the context of accomplishments

Procedure

Lead in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will share my screen with the Ss. They will see a list of accomplishments taken from the coursebook, page 23, as well as the photo that corresponds to the list. Students will be asked three questions. 1. what do all these events have in common? (they are achievements, goals, accomplishments) 2. Which these events relate to you? (they personalize events to their life) 3. How did it make you feel? (more personalized answers). I will help model and answer first by personalizing one of the accomplishments to myself. Then students will openly share their thoughts.

Model (6-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through

We will continue working with the google form already presented. I will now send them the link and ask the students in groups in BORs to read through the model and choose the best answer to fill in the gaps. They will a two minutes to do this task. We will reconvene as a whole class and discuss the answers in the model. As some of the model has multiple answers, I will help the students highlight interchangeable language. Model Answers: 1. I guess or I suppose 2. kind of or sort of 3. incredible or amazing 4. really 5. kind of or a bit 6. I mean 7. I guess or I think 8. extremely or really

Useful Language (3-4 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will share a google doc about useful language taken from the model. We will classify 10 useful expressions into a table with 3 categories. 1. phrases used to but time at the start of a thought, 2. phrases used to be indirect or slightly vague, and 3. words used to emphasize a thought. Ss will work as class to fill out the chart and I will validate their answers by entering them into the chart on a shared screen.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice speaking freely about accomplishments

We wil continue working worth the google doc. The next page of the Doc will prompt the students to discuss with a partner an accomplishment in their life or the life of a friend or family member. They will be sent to BORs to discuss these accomplishments. They can use the the Doc to refer to useful language to help them as they discuss. I will monitor the BORs and note common errors for later DEC. After 8 mins, I will reconvene class and have the Pairs switched so they can practice with a new partner.

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

After they finish their free speaking practice, I will post some common errors on a shared screen and together with the students we will peer correct the errors. This stage can be intermixed with free speaking before students switch ´partners to practice again.
