Lesson for 18 August
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students practise reading skills from the context of travelling. The lesson starts with a discussion on travel and journeys. This is followed by a reading passage on a lawyer who gives up his job to cycle around South America. The reading exercises aim for skimming for gist, scanning for specific information and deducting meaning from the text. Finally there is a speaking exercise to give students speaking practise.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To give students practice in reading, in particular skim reading for gist, scanning for specific information and deducting meaning through the context of travel and journeys.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give students practice in phrasal verbs in the context of travel and to provide fluency speaking practice.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will use the lead-in ideas from the Teacher's book. I will do a w/c discussion. I will start with personalisation and give my answer to the students. - What's the longest journey you have ever taken?

Pre-Reading (8-12 minutes) • To prepare the students for the text

The first exercise is the Student Book's Speaking Exercise No 1. I will ask the students to discuss the 3 questions in groups of 3. (3-5 mins) The second exercise is the Student Book's Reading Exercise no 1. I will ask the students to think of answers to the 2 questions. Then read the article to see if they were correct. (5 - 7 mins)

Reading (15-18 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction exercises

I will move to the Student Book's Exercise No 2 and 3 with a HO. I will walk through the students for each exercise one by one. First they will do individually, then check in pairs, and finally I will elicit answers from them. Exercise 2 - 8-10 minutes Exercise 3 - 7-8 minutes

Post-reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Here I would use the Student Book's Reading Exercise No 4. They would work in pairs to discuss the questions. Then I would ask them to report back. If there is more time than I planned, I would use my back up plan of debate. 'Would you consider giving up your job or studies to do something like Alvaro did? Why or why not?' I would divide the class into two groups (4 - 5 students). Then I would ask them to work in their groups to come up with 5 reasons and write them on the flip chart paper. (5-7 mins) Then I would ask each of them to explain one reason to the other group. (8-10 mins)
