Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put the pictures of 'laff machine', laughing audience and 'a can of laughter'. Say 'These pictures are all related. What do they have in common? And what is this machine for? Discuss in pairs' Ss discuss for 1 minute. W/c FB, respond to interesting ideas. Try to elicit words 'laughter'/'effect'.

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Play the recording of canned laughter (2.51) and ask sts "Who is laughing?" Discuss in pairs. If the students cannot produce ideas, ask questions: "What is canned laughter?" "When do you think it was first used?" "Do you think it is still used today?"

Pre-teaching vocabulary (5-5 minutes) • To pre-teach the vocabulary to make the listening more accessible

Do you know an synonyms of the word 'laugh'? Any words with the same meaning? Ask the Ss to try to match the words with their definitions in pairs. FB with the tape. Ask if there are any problems/ doubts. Ask the Ss which word cannot be used both as a noun and a verb (crack up - only verb).

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information listening tasks

Tell Ss they are going to listen to a lecture. Give them the handout with the questions for listening for specific information task (p.118, Listening ex.2). Ask the Ss to read the questions. Make sure the Ss understand the questions. Ss listen to the recording 2.52. Monitor to see whether they are having problems with any specific questions. Take w/c FB

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ask the Ss to listen and take notes on further details of the statements that they ticked. Play the recording 2.52 again. What kind of FB do I take here? Ss discuss the questions in pairs - and then w/c FB?

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss work in groups of three? and discuss the questions from ex. 4 p. 118
